Phyllis Elaine Massey of Salem, age 97, passed away Thursday, June 9, 2022, at 10:05 p.m. at Baptist Health Floyd Hospital.
She was born May 26, 1925, in Plymouth, Indiana, the daughter of Howard F. and Beulah M. Grossman.
Phyllis and her first husband, John Cleave Green, moved to Salem in the early 1950s, when Phyllis became a front office clerk and part owner in the family business, The Salem Leader. After later purchasing The Salem Democrat, the business became Leader Publishing Company of Salem, Inc. Phyllis worked at the company for several decades before her retirement.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her first husband. She was also preceded in death by a son, Stephen Jay Green; a brother, Rodger J. Grossman; and her parents.
She is survived by her husband of over 40 years, Robert Eugene Massey. Also surviving are a son, David Wayne Green, of Honolulu, Hawaii; two grandsons, John David (Melissa) Rader and Sammy Rader, all of Chattanooga, Tennessee; two great-granddaughters, Kerstyn Rader and Paetyn Rader, Chattanooga, TN; a sister-in-law, Carolyn S. Grossman of Salem; a niece, Nancy Grossman (Mel Green), Salem; and a nephew, Schuyler Grossman, Salem..
Phyllis was especially grateful for the many wonderful caregivers who took care of her needs and brightened her days, making it possible for her to remain in the comfort of her home in the company of her husband, Bob.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m.Tuesday at Dawalt Funeral Home, 204 East Market Street, Salem. The funeral service will begin at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery in Salem.
