D. (Donivan) Mahuron Obituary

D (Donivan) Jack Mahuron beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather passed away Saturday, January 7, 2023 at the age of 96.

Jack was born October 30, 1926 to John M Mahuron and Bertha C Akers Mahuron. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Warren and sister Mary Lou Routh.

Jack learned from the early age of 6 about the value of hard work.  First from the family owned Mahuron Dairy delivering milk by way of a horse drawn wagon and then to a delivery truck.  Following graduation from Salem High School in 1944 he joined the US Army and served in France and Germany only later to be recalled in 1950 for the Korean War.  After years of service in the military he was later discharged from the Indiana National Guard in 1986.  He came back home in the 1950s with the intention of going to dental school, instead he took a summer job at the Farmers Citizens Bank as a file clerk and retired as President of the bank which is now PNC Bank.
Believing in serving his community he became a tireless volunteer involved with the establishment of the Washington County Community Foundation, the building and financing of the John Hay Center and Stevens Memorial Museum and the restoration and financing of Beck’s Mill.  Jack was the chairman of the full year celebration of our Sesquicentennial in 1964, which was the longest and biggest celebration in Salem’s history.  He served 40 years as a volunteer fireman and was an active 80 year member of the First Christian Church, Salem.  His volunteer interests also included the field of education by being a former advisory board member of Indiana University Southeast and the Paul W Ogle Cultural & Community Center.

Jack was a man of humor, integrity, compassion and had a curious mind, asked a lot of questions and always had a project or a new idea in mind.  He was proud to be from Salem and especially proud that he and his brother, Warren, established Warren’s Sweet Shop which is now H&R Bakery. He, along with Frank Ball, developed and constructed homes becoming Fair Acres.  Sharing stories with his family of banking, business, community service and traveling all 7 continents of the world made for educational conversations at every Sunday family dinner.
Up until death he was still serving on committees involving the City of Salem, Washington County, State of Indiana and the US Army.  He was active in politics as a Republican and served as an alternate or delegate to at least 5 national conventions.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 64 years Carol; son Chris (Jane) Godfrey; son John (Laura) Mahuron; daughter Julie (Bruce) Snider; son Joe (Christine) Mahuron; grandchildren Sean Godfrey, Andrew Godfrey, Michael Mahuron, Teddi (Nick) Purkhiser, Joe Snider, Thomas Snider, Shane Mahuron and Grant Mahuron; great grandchildren Reid Mahuron, Wayne Mahuron, James Purkhiser and Sawyer Purkhiser.

Visitation will be held at Dawalt Funeral Home in Salem, Indiana on Tuesday, January 10th from 4 to 8 pm and Wednesday after 9 am.  The funeral will be held Wednesday January 11th at 11 am at Dawalt Funeral Home with internment to follow in Crown Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to the Friends of Beck’s Mill Fund through the Washington County Community Foundation (wccf.biz).
