John McConnell

John McConnell (born June 4, 1944) passed away on March 27, son of the late Herbert and Ruth McConnell who resided in Salem for many years.

John was a managing associate at Bentz Whaley Flessner where his expertise was in campaign planning and implementation, major gift strategy development, and training institutional leaders, staffs, and volunteers in their fundraising efforts. Previously he held senior development positions at DePauw University, Purdue University, University of Alberta (Canada), and University of Denver. At a time when universities are grappling with diminished budgets, John pioneered ingenious ways of raising funds to support institutions of higher learning that he revered.

John McConnell received his Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and Economics from DePauw University and a Master of Arts in Economics and a Certificate in Russian and East European Studies from the University of Michigan. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He began the Management Fellows program at, DePauw where he was a member of the Delta Upsilon fraternity. He and his wife Bettina (Guzdzial) McConnell married on May 29, 1976.

Throughout his life John felt a deep connection to his hometown of Salem. He continued to subscribe to the local paper and support education in the community where his parents were teachers. He chose to return to Salem for his final resting place.

John leaves behind his beloved wife Bettina McConnell, son Matthew McConnell who is a Fellow in Gastroenterology at Yale University School of Medicine, daughter-in-law Joanna Steinberg, mother-in-law Carmela Guzdzial with her brother Francis Brancaleone and his wife Elsa Jean, and his cousins James and William McConnell, Lynn Barton, and Ann Sebrell and their spouses.

There will be a graveside service 11:00 am Saturday at Crown Hill Cemetery and the public is invited.

In Lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be made in memory of John McConnell to Red Bird Mission, 70 Queendale Center  Beverly, Kentucky  40913-9607.
