Dick W. Thompson, Sr., age 86 of Salem, passed away Saturday, November 24, 2018 at 12:10 pm, in Robley Rex VA Medical Center in Louisville.
Born June 7, 1932 in Pekin, Indiana, he was the son of the late Albert and Bonnie (Ripperdan) Thompson.
He was a retired owner/operator truck driver and was a former union carpenter.
He served during the Korean War in the U.S. Army, and was the recipient of a purple heart. He was a member of the New Providence Masonic Lodge #237 F. & A.M., the Salem American Legion Cecil Grimes Post #41 and the Salem V.F.W. Post #6636.
On February 23, 1962 he married Wilneatha J. (Smedley) Thompson, who passed away March 12, 2016.
Survivors include: Son: Dick W. (Diana) Thompson Jr. of Yankton, South Dakota; 2 Daughters: Sandi Gilstrap of Salem and Gina Thompson of Jeffersonville; 3 Grandchildren: Eric Moser, Chelsie Stephens and Holly Shields McDonald and 6 Great grandsons: Parker, Wyatt and Jhett Stephens, Tevin and Brady McDonald and Landon Bierly.
He was preceded in death by 3 brothers: Leo, Ted and Carl Thompson and 3 sisters: Gladys Early, Ruby Houghland and Olive Marie Miller.
Funeral Service: 1:00 pm Wednesday at Dawalt Funeral Home followed by interment in Crown Hill cemetery with full military honors.
Visitation: 4 to 8 pm Tuesday and Noon until the time of the service on Wednesday.
